Why do I need a root canal and how does it work?
It is very important to make sure that you have a good, daily dental hygiene routine in place and that you visit your dentist on a regular basis to prevent plaque and tartar from building up on your teeth. Plaque and tartar are the main causes of the majority of dental issues and although plaque is always building on the surface of the teeth, it can be removed with effective brushing. If you allow plaque to remain on your teeth then over time layers of plaque build up on the surface of your teeth and harden to form tartar. Unfortunately tartar cannot be removed by brushing alone and requires a dental or hygienist appointment at which a scale and polish is carried out. This is to ensure professional cleaning of your teeth and gums to remove any excess plaque and any tartar which may have formed in your mouth.
If you avoid the dentist then plaque and tartar will remain on your teeth and continue to build up, resulting in more bacteria in your mouth, which can lead to cavities or tooth decay. Tooth decay may be asymptomatic to begin with, however, damage to your tooth can result in bacteria leaking into it, resulting in infection of the root canal at the centre of your tooth.
If you need to undergo a root canal Edinburgh then you will first require an X-ray to show that the root canal is either infected or damaged. If the dental pulp is infected then it will begin to die and allow the infection to spread further, so it is important that this issue is addressed immediately.

How does a root canal work?
A root canal Edinburgh comprises a sequence of events which are carried out to remove the bacteria from inside the tooth and treat the infection of the root canal. A small hole will be created by drilling into your tooth and the bacteria will be scraped out from inside. Once this has been carried out successfully you will need to visit your dentist again. This time the root canal will be filled and your tooth will be sealed using a crown or a filling depending on your individual dental requirements. A root canal is a successful treatment procedure and in 9 out of 10 cases the tooth is saved. Unfortunately where extensive infection has occurred you may have to undergo a tooth extraction. Speak to us at Edinburgh Endodontist today and find out more about root canal treatment and how it can help restore your oral health very soon.
